Kiwi Saffron is an industry leader in the New Zealand saffron market. What started as a hobby has grown into a fully-fledged business that is seeing success after success. The most recent achievement the company has experienced was when they were named as a finalist in the 2018 New Zealand Artisan Awards. “We were delighted to hear the announcement of our inclusion as finalists alongside so many fabulous artisan products. We are thrilled and very proud that our product has impressed the panel of judges. We are passionate about growing high-grade saffron and, as we say in the far south; it’s as good as gold. What started out for us as a huge leap of faith in a tiny purple flower has blossomed into a growing business with a band of dedicated followers,” said owner Jo Daley.
With winners set to be announced the 21st September, the team at Kiwi Saffron are keeping their fingers and toes crossed in the hopes that winning would validate the quality of their saffron and also help to promote the plant as a food and even a health supplement that can be successfully grown in New Zealand to a world-class standard. “As a developing business in a niche market it is difficult to gain exposure in the marketplace and to win would be of great benefit towards achieving that. It is important for us to promote the growth of certified organic produce in New Zealand and the provenance of paddock to plate.”
In the future, the team plan to increase its commercial plantings to grow the business even more. “Overseas customers require a larger volume than New Zealand currently is able to supply. Also, to research other uses for the plant, and to add value products,” added Daley.
