For the second year in a row, Consumer NZ has tested several sunscreen brands to find the most protective one. Consumer NZ found that many household sunscreens do not offer the protection that the labels indicate.
Twenty sunscreens were tested, and almost half did not meet the standards on its labels. However, NIVEA proved to be the leading sunscreen brand, as it met both its label claims and its broad-spectrum protection requirements. NIVEA SUN Protect & Moisture Moisturising Sunscreen Lotion SPF50 has proven to be one of New Zealand’s most trusted sunscreens.
“New Zealand has one of the highest rates of skin cancer and melanoma in the world, but the sunscreen standard remains voluntary,” said Consumer NZ’s chief executive, Sue Chetwin.
The Cancer Society and Sunsense tested its products at the AMA laboratory in the U.S. AMA’s owner allegedly falsified test results from 1987 to April 2017. “For many years, sunscreen companies have been sending us test results from AMA that conflicted with our tests. We think companies relying on these results should urgently re-test at a different lab to ensure they can back up claims.”
Finding the most trustworthy sunscreen brand is essential for the health and future of all New Zealanders.
