ACME & CO was founded in 2011 by Jeff Kennedy, founder of Caffe L’AFFARE, and partner Bridget Dunn. We spoke to sales and marketing manager Grace Fuhrer about the stripped-back business.
What is your company background, how did you start the business?
ACME & CO. was founded in 2011 by Jeff Kennedy and partner Bridget Dunn (founders of Caffe L’AFFARE). It has since been on a design based mission, based on the Greek philosophers’ idea that adornment of any kind in most cases is unnecessary and a waste of valuable resources. Like the “little black dress”, there is no better way to show off the female hourglass body. All other fashion doesn’t quite cut it.
ACME & CO is always trying to choose products, shapes, food cups, trolleys, tables, chairs, coffee, pens, hats, buildings, entertainment, music and fundraisers that are functional, sustainable and durable and that don’t go out of fashion. And minimal. To achieve simplicity is usually very complex.
ACME doesn’t focus on coming up with “groundbreaking NPD, never seen on the market before”. Instead, we strive to improve on products, for example, we sell our ACME Coffee Cups globally, and customers buy these because they have the perfect volumes, weights and shapes for the specialty espresso coffee market.
What are the current product range and variants and how do these products stand out in the market?
Prefab Eatery is our flagship café and the test lab for all our ACME Products. We trial all our products here and those with growth opportunity or that perform well, we take to market. It was only natural when Jeff & Bridget opened Prefab, for Jeff to start roasting his own coffee again. We roast all our coffee on-site in Prefab, it is roasted on a daily basis and is then sampled, tested and enjoyed by hundreds of our customers every day.
Instead of creating a huge range of different blends, we focus on 2 main blends; Espresso and Pour Plunge Brew, plus a Decaf option. This allows us to roast all our coffee on the day that we receive the order, which ensures our product is always fresh and doesn’t sit around before being sent out to stores.
True to our mission, we are not the first company to sell Coffee, nor are we the first to sell the rest of our product range which includes Curry Powder, Eucalyptus Oil Spray, Gherkins, Sauerkraut and several fish products.
However, we strive to have products that are fresh and made from top-quality ingredients. For example, our ACME Curry Powder is our own homemade recipe, which is blended by the chefs at Prefab Eatery. We are very proud of this product and include it in many of our dishes on our menu at Prefab.
You will have to go online to our website www.acmeandco.co.nz to read about the rest of our products and try them for yourself.
Has there been any recent company news?
Whilst we have been trading for some time, our expansion into mainstream supermarkets only began at the start of 2019. We still have a lot of work to be done in the market, to increase our distribution.
What are the plans for the business moving forward, is there any expansion on the horizon?
We will continue to grow our business, but we will ensure that we do not comprise on quality in order to do this.
Where are your products currently available to buy, and are you looking at or wanting to expand your availability? If so, where would you like to see the product situated?
All of our products are available at Prefab Eatery, our flagship café and the test lab for all our ACME Products, as well as on our website acmeandco.co.nz
Several of our products are available at Moore Wilsons, Farro Fresh, and Commonsense Organics stores. We are also available in select Supermarkets, Four Squares, Pharmacies and Specialty Independent Grocery Stores.
