BIG SUPERMARKET CHAINS HAVE AN EYE ON RICHMOND

Both major retail players Countdown and Foodstuffs are sticking with their plans to build new stores at Richmond, on the South Island.
Progressive Enterprises lodged papers with the council last year to rezone a site from residential to commercial, and the application is currently being processed. A decision on its status is expected to be made by early February. Meanwhile, two resource consents have been granted and another two appear to be on hold for a New World store, which is set to be built on a property bought by Foodstuffs South Island in 2007.
