David Stanley began Canterbury Biltong by mistake. He just wanted some decent biltong, which in 2002 was relatively unobtainable in New Zealand. Now, the air dried beef snacks in Phillipstown, Christchurch is available in supermarkets nationwide. David chatted with the team about growing the brand.
What is your company background, how did you start the business?
I started it in the usual place, the garden shed, after not being able to find any decent biltong when we came to New Zealand in 2002. I took some to the Wild Foods Festival and grew the business to what is now classed as a medium sized business. We have now grown out of three sets of premises as we grow our brand.
What are the current product range and variants and how do these products stand out in the market?
We supply our range of 40g and 100g air dried beef products. They are shelf stable for 12 months, gluten free, preservative free and taste great. They do not need to be refrigerated and have high protein, low carb and fat so are used for all sorts of outdoor adventures but also taste great with a cheeseboard or as a healthy snack.
Has there been any recent company news?
We recently have launched a venison product and our new single serve 25g packs, which look amazing. We are growing all the time and are building a new purpose-built factory which we hope to move into by the end of the year.
What are the plans for the business moving forward, is there any expansion on the horizon?
Yes, building a new factory, new products, and new markets.
Where are your products currently available to buy, and are you looking at or wanting to expand your availability? If so, where would you like to see the product situated?
Supermarkets and many service stations nationwide, liquor stores and school tuck shops, delis and tourist stops. We also supply about 500 stores in Australia.
