A Coles exclusive wine has been named best wine under $20 at the Winestate Wine of the Year Awards held in Adelaide. The Story Bay Semillion Sauvignon Blanc 2017 was judged the winner by a group of expert judges of winemakers, wine scientists and Masters of Wine from a group of 2,500 competitors.
Priced at just $7 the winning wine is described as having vibrant tropical fruit aromas with a refreshing acid backbone that provides both structure and length.
Peter Simic, Winestate publisher and head of the judging panel said that the Margaret River wine stood out delivering on value and taste. “It was pretty close but this wine had the highest rating out of all the tastings at the lowest price, it really deserved the trophy. For the amazing value price of $7, plus a high blind judging score, this should be everybody’s everyday drinking wine.”
While Coles acting chief executive for liquor and hotels, Cathi Scarce added that the praise was a testament to the hard work of winemaker Alana Langworthy from Western Australian winery Nocturne Wines, who has made exclusive wines for Coles Liquor since 2012. “To have this recognition from some of the industry’s top wine tasters is further evidence that we’re getting it right by working with the best winemakers in Australia to deliver amazing quality wines at a great price,” she said.
