DUNEDIN LIQUOR POLICY REJECTED

Parts of the Dunedin City Council liquor policy have been deemed ‘unreasonable’ by the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority (ARLA), including a proposal to cut off-licence hours from 7am-11pm to 9am-9pm and a planned moratorium on bottle shops in North Dunedin, where the University of Otago’s campus is located.

Both supermarket chains Countdown and Foodstuffs had appealed the proposal, and are now looking to engage with the council over the liquor policies. Mayor Dave Cull, however, said the council was considering appealing ARLA’s decision.
