A Japanese company is believed to have developed an organic banana with a peel that is edible by using a unique ‘freeze-thawing awakening’ method. Inventor Setsuzo Tanaka from D&T Farms named the fruit Mongee, which translates to ‘incredible banana’ in Japanese. His vision was to produce a banana without the use of pesticides that had a richer, sweeter taste than those currently available on the market. With the increase of fungus and diseases, bananas have become vulnerable and the use of pesticides has become a mainstay. The Mongee has a tropical taste that is similar to a pineapple and is currently only available in Japan where they are sold for US$6 a piece.
