MAGNUM DEFENDS LESBIAN WEDDING AD

Magnum’s new ad, depicting a lesbian wedding in which the brides kiss and then feed each other ice cream has created controversy, with one television viewer complaining that it promoted lesbianism.  The Advertising Standards Board said that because of the depiction of a wedding and the brevity of the kiss, there was nothing inappropriate about the kiss.  Same sex marriage is not yet legal in Australia, where the complaint was received, but the Board said this does not mean it is inappropriate to portray it in an advert.  Magnum’s parent company, Unilever, said that they were aware that the Advertising Standards Board had judged other same sex kisses in adverts as appropriate, and were focusing on the depiction of of the marriage, ‘irrespective of sexual orientation of the partners’.
