NEW PALMERSTON NORTH STORE IS ONE STEP CLOSER

Countdown Pioneer project

After two years of back and forth, Countdown has been given the green light to build its proposed Palmerston North store on Pioneer Highway.

The application was turned down last year because it didn’t fully comply with the Council’s planning rules, but the two parties have now agreed on changes to the design, and have asked the Court to order a consent that will allow the supermarket to go ahead.

Mayor Grant Smith said a way had been found that satisfies the community, and residents are now welcoming the prospect of a new store creating 100 job opportunities. It’s too early to say when construction would begin but, according to Palmerston North developer Brian Green, the council’s approach to the development had been counterproductive, and the long process had already damaged the city’s reputation with developers.
