High demand for fruit and vegetables left Countdown in Ponsonby with virtually empty shelves last week. The supply of fruit and vegetables was reduced following rain before Christmas. Kiri Hannifin, Countdown’s general manager of corporate affairs and sustainability, noted that the warmer weather has also increased demand for BBQ type foods, like salad and meats. According to Hannifin, the Ponsonby store case was an anomaly, but other areas around the country have expressed similar shortages, with varying severity.
Meanwhile, Whanganui was hit with a bread shortage last Saturday at Countdown and Pak’nSave following a manufacturer malfunction. Both Countdown and Pak’nSave have apologised to customers and assure them that things should be back to normal now.
