Some residents are opposing Countdown Regent’s expansion plans in Whangarei, claiming they were left out of the consultation process. One of them, Marilyn Andela, collected 23 signed letters from neighbours living nearby, stating they had not been invited to have their say. Among the concerns being raised were noise, especially before 7 am, and increased traffic flow.
Countdown’s plans include extending the building by 686 sqm, developing a larger car park with 185 spaces, and changing the store’s entry point. Whangarei District Council planners recommended granting resource consent to Progressive Enterprises, and traffic consultant Donald McKenzie said the proposed development would have less than minor effects on the surrounding area.
