Supermarket operators Progressive Enterprises plan to develop a 21-hectare site in Halswell featuring 272 new homes, a supermarket, shopping area, parks, a pre-school, eateries, and a covered swimming pool. Progressive Enterprises, the owners of Countdown are currently seeking the resource consent to develop land they bought two years ago for $27 million from three owners.
The thinking behind the project is that the new areas will provide a stronger sense of community. By providing the necessary infrastructure, they are essentially creating supply and demand. The proposed site is within the Christchurch District Plan’s outline development plan area which provides for residential and some commercial development between Halswell, Hendersons, Sparks and Milns Road.
