SUPERMARKETS ARE HAVENS FOR GERMS

Clean freaks better deal with it — even the cleanest supermarket has its share of germs, and the most touched spots are also those teeming with bacteria.
Conveyor belts are among them. According to a study by Michigan State University, they can house yeast, mould, staph and coliform; since bacteria were found on 100 percent of belts tested, it would too optimistic to expect your local store to be immune.
Being constantly in contact with hands, money and bags, checkout counters are also amongst the dirtiest areas. But if bank notes are notoriously dirty, the same can be said of pin pads; a research conducted in 2011 by microbiologist Richard Hastings found them “heavily contaminated with bacteria, dirtier than public lavatories.” Samples from both areas contained pseudomonads and bacillus, which can cause diarrhoea.
Quite obviously, fruit and vegetables should always be washed after purchase, to get rid of all the nasty germs left behind by dozens of unknown hands. Last, but not least, beware of raw meat packages; according to a UK survey, 40 percent of chicken packs were covered in bacteria.
