UK supermarket, Iceland has become the first British grocery store to sell biodegradable, plastic-free chewing gum. The gum which is made using a form of tree sap was stocked a part of the supermarket’s pledge to be plastic free by 2023.
The new all-natural gum, aptly named Simply Gum, is 100 per cent biodegradable making it better for the environment and England’s footpaths. The gum is made from chicle, a form of tree sap found in a tree native to Central America called sapodilla. It has no synthetics, artificial flavours or preservatives and comes in a range of interesting flavours such as cinnamon, fennel, ginger, coffee, maple and of course mint.
“I created Simply Gum because I recognised a need for a natural gum that was made with high quality, sustainable ingredients. We chose Iceland as our UK launch partner because of this shared commitment to quality and sustainability.” Said Caron Proschan, Simply Gum creator.
