In New Zealand if you’re looking for superior nut and seed butters for your shelves, look to Ceres Organics. Locally made, their butters are certified organic by BioGro. Mother Earth’s NEW peanut butter packaging highlights the range’s strengths: natural, vegan-friendly and packed in a fully recyclable PET pot. Seen by consumers as mainstream and affordable, this is an important stepping-stone between every day and premium peanut butters.

The market for premium/natural peanut butter has mushroomed while every day/not-so-natural peanut butters are in decline. The latest figures show natural peanut butter sales have grown by $2.56m, while peanut butters with added oil, sugar, emulsifiers etc. have declined by $742k. The net effect is $1.8m category growth, (IRI Market Data, MAT 29/10/19).

This growth is in line with current consumer trends:

  • Health & wellness is top of mind, because consumers are making healthier food choices. Natural peanut butter has a clean label and is a source of both protein and monounsaturated fats.
  • The increasing demand for plant-based foods as more Kiwis turn flexitarian, vegetarian or vegan. Peanut butter is ideal for plant-based diets, not only a delicious spread and snack (eaten by the spoonful!), it’s also used in cooking and baking.

Predictions are the trend towards natural peanut butter will continue with Mother Earth’s range shifting more sales in that direction.
