NWWA Top 50 – Two Rivers

Two Rivers takes its name from the iconic Wairau and Awatere rivers of Marlborough. Energetic and talented, founder David Clouston grew up on the banks of these rivers and with 25 years of winemaking experience worldwide, he is the driving force behind Two Rivers. David’s bold approach to winemaking and his desire to push boundaries makes for distinctive and innovative wines. Their highly acclaimed, multi-varietal Rosé is championing New Zealand Rosé around the world, while they are celebrated for complex, elegant and textured Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

SupermarketNews spoke to owner and winemaker, David Clouston about the winery and its award-winning wines.

What characteristics of your wine are influenced by the physical landscape of your winery?

“The convergence of flavours from the Awatere and Wairau rivers are reflected in their Sauvignon Blanc. Tropical passionfruit aromatics come from the Wairau River vineyards and bright, mineral acidity comes from the Awatere River vineyards.”

What is one of the most rewarding things about winemaking?

“Being able to share your creations with friends, family and consumers.”

TASTING NOTES

“Bright straw in colour, this classy Sauvignon Blanc has explosive aromatics of blackcurrant, juniper berry, jasmine and pawpaw that mingle with subtle notes of fresh capsicum, pea pod and grass. Dry and saline, persistent flavours of kaffir lime and passionfruit are revealed alongside bright, mouth-watering acidity. The distinctive palate has a lovely creamy texture and a smooth, pure finish.”

What was important in making this award-winning wine?

“Absolute key decisions were when to harvest the grapes. We had a three-day window in which to pick the fruit at the perfect time. Vineyard selection is paramount to producing super premium Sauvignon Blanc.”

Food Pairing?

“Seasonal Spring and Summer dishes.”

How long can you shelf your winning bottle of wine for?

“Optimum drinking is two-three years, however the wine will age up to 10 years.”

Who would your wine appeal to?

“Anyone who loves wines that contain citrus fruit, salt and umami flavours.”

How would you describe this wine to someone who's never had this grape varietal/blend before?

“Bright, delicious and with very distinctive and easily recognisable flavours in the wine.”

If you could do a wine bottle swap with any winery in NZ or the world, which winery and wine would it be with?

“Dagueneau Silex Vineyard, Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc.”
