CHINESE ARE TOP SPENDERS ON KIWI WINE

According to recent statistics released by China Daily, New Zealand’s wine exports in China are growing again, becoming our sixth largest wine market with a total sales of $27 million for the last financial year (June 2014 – June 2015). Figures are still far behind those of other export destinations; during the same period, the US accounted for $372 million, followed by Australia ($362 million), the UK ($354 million), Canada ($95 million) and the Netherlands ($41 million).
Nonetheless, Chinese buyers spend $14.47 per litre for NZ wine, much more than Canadians ($10), Americans ($7), Australians ($6.50) and British (less than $6). They mostly buy online and are concerned about provenance, authenticity and food security, preferring red wines over white, with the most popular variety being pinot noir.
