A new sophisticated vineyard map, showing varietal differences, is about to put Marlborough on a global scale. Developed by Wine Marlborough to replace the region’s old, one-dimensional map, the project started 18 months ago and was welcomed with enthusiasm.
Around 40 percent of the local vineyards have been electronically mapped so far, some of them for the first time. Those willing to get involved have shared information about their plants, the estimated size of their vineyard block and the grape variety. Larger wineries seemed to be less keen to participate, though, which made it impossible to release the map during the International Sauvignon Blanc Celebration next February.
A powerful tool for marketing and biosecurity, the electronic map could be used by wineries to better reach prospective buyers, and to locate and isolate disease outbreaks.
