A checkout operator at Countdown Blenheim was caught selling alcohol to two boys, aged 16 and 17, despite having looked at their IDs. The incident is the fifth of its kind occurring over the past 10 years within the same store, which now risks to have its off-licence suspended for one month.
Speaking through its lawyer, Countdown said that human error was to blame, but accepted that a lengthy period of suspension was appropriate.
“Countdown takes its responsibility under the Act very seriously and is committed to ensuring the sale and supply of alcohol in a safe manner,” said Jo McNaught, operations manager of Countdown, adding that three staff members had been terminated for disciplinary reasons.
The penalty will be communicated over the coming weeks.
