KIWI FAVOURITES NOW HEALTHIER

Whether it’s piled on toast, used as a pizza topping, sandwiched between a toastie, or eaten hot straight from the bowl, Kiwis love the unmistakable taste of Wattie’s Baked Beans and Wattie’s Spaghetti. Our love affair is no secret, and chances are you’ve got a can of Wattie’s Baked Beans or Wattie’s Spaghetti sitting in your pantry. Now families can enjoy their favourite beans and spaghetti, while making a healthier choice, with the launch of Wattie’s Baked Beanz 50% less added sugar and Wattie’s Spaghetti 50% less added sugar.

The new Wattie’s Baked Beanz 50% less added sugar and Wattie’s Spaghetti 50% less added sugar have added sweetness from the extracts of the stevia leaf and are also 30% lower in salt than the regular versions.

Tinkering with the recipe of these iconic Kiwi foods was no small undertaking. It’s taken a lot of hard work to perfect the recipe and get this version just right, with that great Wattie’s taste but with just half the added sugar and 30% less salt.

“Kiwis have some creative ways of eating Wattie’s Baked Beanz and Wattie’s Spaghetti, but what unites the fans is the taste. We weren’t willing to compromise on a great tasting product," said Penny Bailey, Heinz Wattie's Nutritionist.

“We think we’ve got the balance just right so the new 50% less added sugar versions have the rich, tomato taste that Kiwis love, with less added sugar.

“We challenge people to try these new additions to our Wattie’s Baked Beanz and Spaghetti range,” said Bailey.

Dietitian Sarah Hanrahan from New Zealand Nutrition Foundation praises Wattie’s for the new additions to the range. “It’s really positive to see a great tasting, healthier option for consumers in this popular range, and we applaud any effort to improve the food environment," said Hanrahan.

The new 50% less added sugar versions will sit alongside the regular Wattie’s Baked Beans and Wattie’s Spaghetti, as well as Wattie’s Baked Beans Lite and Wattie’s Spaghetti Lite, which are also lower in sugar and salt. These new products are another step in the Heinz Wattie’s journey in continuously improving its product range, ensuring New Zealanders can make a healthier choice for their families without compromising on taste.
