AUSTRALIA | Australia has ranked among the top three ice cream-loving nations globally, consuming around 18 litres per person each year.
So, it’s no surprise that when it comes to frozen treats, Aussies don’t just indulge, they go all in.
Streets, part of The Magnum Ice Cream Company, has unwrapped the numbers on what Aussies have been licking, slurping and chomping this year.
“Ice cream isn’t just a summer fling. Aussies are committed year-round. From Bubble ‘O Bill noses to cracking Magnum chocolate, our data shows we’re a country that knows how to treat itself,” said Scott Mingl, GM ANZ, The Magnum Ice Cream Company.
Queensland wears the crown as the state that ate the most ice cream per capita. Surprisingly, Tasmania comes in second, beating the favourite, NSW + ACT.
Melbourne CBD consumed more ice cream than any other major city, while NT, despite ranking joint last overall, saw Darwin City, Alice Springs and Berrimah top the regional charts.
The most popular time for an ice cream run was Saturdays between 4 to 5 pm. Those who grabbed a box of Golden Gaytimes at the supermarket are likely to have also tossed in a frozen pizza.
NSW smashed over 6.7 million Golden Gaytimes, taking the top spot and making it the Gaytime capital of Australia. It leads the nation in Magnum ice cream consumption, enjoying more than 19 million in the past year, around 24 percent more than VIC, which came in second with just over 15 million.
Blue Ribbon vanilla remained a fan favourite in NSW, VIC and QLD, making it the number one vanilla in Australia. Multipacks have been the reigning champs in the freezer aisle, outselling tubs and single sticks combined.
- Aussies chewed through more than 33 tonnes of Bubble ‘O Bill bubble gum noses – that's enough to fill the MCG up to about knee height.
- Enough Golden Gaytime crumb to coat Surfers Paradise beach entirely.
- Paddle Pops? An Olympic swimming pool worth – and chocolate (not rainbow) was the fave.
- Over 2.4 million Aussie Kensington Pride mangoes and 34.5 tonnes of Australian-grown macadamia nuts were turned into iconic Weis Bars this year alone.
- Enough cracking Magnum ice cream chocolate to coat Federation Square four times over.
Mingl concluded that the data spoke for itself.
“Bottom line? We’re a nation that doesn’t just love ice cream – we’re obsessed. At The Magnum Ice Cream Company, our mission is simple: make life taste better with ice cream. And looking at these numbers, Aussies are helping us deliver on that in the sweetest way possible.”
