AUSTRALIA | The NSW Government has reimagined the iconic Sydney harbourside and the surrounding Bays Precinct to create a Sydney Fish Market for the future with world-class facilities.
The new Sydney Fish Market, set to open on the 19th of January 2026, will attract global attention, with visitation expected to double to over 6 million people annually.
This is Sydney's most significant harbourside building since the Opera House. Designed by renowned architects 3XN, who worked with Sydney firms BVN and Aspect Studios, the facility will be a purpose-built, authentic operating fish market and a major food and dining attraction on Sydney’s inner harbour.
The design is a world-class piece of architecture, with a distinctive wave-shaped and scale-patterned roof that pays homage to the fishing industry.
The countdown to the opening of the new Sydney Fish Market is underway. Every detail is being fine-tuned to deliver an unforgettable experience for Sydneysiders and visitors.
The lighting test at the new Sydney Fish Market offered a stunning glimpse of what’s to come, featuring a roof cassette lighting to highlight the architectural elegance of the roofline and enhance its iconic silhouette, dynamic multi-coloured displays that could be activated for special events such as Vivid Sydney and a public domain lighting for a welcoming and vibrant environment for all.
This impressive installation included over 400 luminaires in 1,200mm and 600mm lengths, connected by more than 4km of cabling.
As the final touches are being made, the new Sydney Fish Market has shaped up to be more than just a place to buy seafood; it’s becoming a landmark of light, life, and culture.
Sydney Fish Market is more than a fish market. The new Market represents not only a state-of-the-art waterfront icon, but also an AUD 750 million injection of support into the national seafood industry.
This building presents an invaluable opportunity for Sydney Fish Market to transform operations and deliver an expanded business model that leverages this significant investment from the NSW Government to strengthen pride in the Australian seafood industry.
