AMAZON DOMINATES U.S ONLINE GROCERY MARKET

A report released by One Click Retail has revealed that Amazon.com Inc now has the most significant share of online grocery sales in the U.S. The report shows that the company has seized 18 per cent of online grocery sales since 2017. With increased consumer growth in nearly every grocery category, it is no surprise that the company’s sales are up 40 per cent. The report estimates that Amazon’s second quarter grocery sales have increased by $650 million since 2017 with the leading grocery category being beverage.

Cold beverages and coffee saw the highest increase with both categories up 36 to 40 per cent. Meal replacement shakes, and premium coffee pods rounded out the top five highest grossing trends in the beverage category. Breakfast foods saw an increase of 36 per cent as did meal essentials. Snack Foods continued its increase up $75 million with baby food, confectionary and bottled water also seeing a rise in sales. The companies own private label brands have also gained popularity, with their coffee pod brand Solimo making an estimated $60,000 in weekly sales.

The report comes after Amazon had its record-setting Prime Day, which saw the online retailer have its most successful shopping day in the company’s history. The day saw customers buy more than 100 million products in just 36 hours.
