Sales for Mars Wrigley Confectionary in the UK have dropped as consumers are becoming more and more health conscious. Revelations released last week confirming that traditional chewing gum contains plastic have contributed to the decline in sales. Supermarket and convenience store sales were already in decline when news was leaked that traditional gum brands, such as PK and Extra, contain synthetic polymers and plasticisers.
The UK’s food and drink bible reported that the whole country’s chewing gum category had lost 3.8 per cent of its sales value, falling from $335 million last year.
Mars took over Wrigley’s in 2018 after announcing a merger with the company back in 2016.
Beating consumer trends, UK supermarket chain Iceland recently became the first company in the UK to introduce plastic free gum into its stores. The brand called Simply Gum is made using tree sap. Last year, Functional gums launched the first Natur gums which it claims is 100 per cent biodegradable and natural.
