More than 500 volunteers were invited to taste GM food products in 24 Chinese cities nationwide. The initiative followed the announcement by well-known former CCTV host Cui Yongyuan that he would open a non-GM food company, providing non-GM food to 30,000 consumers across three cities.
Despite the fact that GM food has been available in China for more than 20 years, its safety continues to be hotly debated. One of the volunteers attending the GM tastings said he hoped the event would encourage more people to support the GM industry. “Some online rumours have misled the public, causing many people to reject the fact that GM foodstuffs have been proven safe by science," he said.
