The Council of State in France has overturned the government's recent ban on 'meaty' descriptions of plant-based foods.
The official decree was set to be enforced from October 2022, and banned words such as steak, bacon, sausage or carpaccio from describing foods that were plant-based. Its goal was to avoid consumer confusion.
The restrictions were overturned on July 27 after a request from the alternative proteins and plant-based association called Protéines France. The proposal stated that operators couldn't comply with new restrictions within the short time frame, to which the Council agreed.
