The supermarket of the future has opened in Milan, Italy. The store stocks around 6000 products which are displayed on interactive shelves and tables. High tech screens are shown above the shelves, and when a product is moved, the screens display relevant information about the product such as nutritional information, waste disposal instructions and information about the products allergens. The store also contains separate screens aimed at promoting sustainable consumption. The screens also show customers top selling products and cooking suggestions.

Carlo Ratti, the MIT designer who first came up with the futuristic concept said, “In the near future, we will be able to discover everything there is to know about the apple we are looking at: the tree it grew on, the CO2 it produced, the chemical treatments it received and its journey to the supermarket shelf.”

Supermarket technology is growing at an increased rate as the likes of Amazon Go expand its cashierless stores, and major supermarket chains such as Walmart and Kroger continue to test driverless delivery systems.
