South Korean food-tech firm Phyto Corporation has developed the world’s first plant-based salt PhytoSalt, made from the seawater-grown crop Salicornia.
Salicornia belongs in the salt-accumulating plants called halophytes. Its high salt content has stopped others from using it as a food resource in the past due to its overwhelmingly salty taste. However, with Phyto Corporation’s desalination technologies the company was able to develop a 100 percent plant-based salt by separating the sodium from Salicornia and using the desalted excess to make a new superfood.
PhytoSalt is allegedly 100 percent microplastics free and is naturally low in sodium. The product is set to launch in December in South Korea.
