The final record-breaking Black Friday stats are in from millions of Shopify merchants across the globe. A total of $5.37 billion in sales were made, up 17 percent from 2021. The top five spending nations were the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia and Germany. The average cart price for a single transaction in New Zealand was $143.23, with Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton and Tauranga being the top spending cities.

Globally, the peak sales per minute on Black Friday were $3.30 million, and the average cart price sat at $158. The top product category was apparel and accessories.

“This year’s Black Friday is back with a bang, as it grows to be one of the biggest commerce events, with average spending having broken records from previous years. We’ve seen consumers spend during this season to save in the long run as they make more considered and conscious purchases from independent brands. It’s inspiring to see Shopify merchants buzzing this weekend, as they meet their customers online, in-store, or everywhere in between, to make a real connection and build loyalty with shoppers,” said Shaun Broughton, Shopify’s Managing Director APAC.
