Bye Bye Bananas

Bananas might become scarce after a shipment from Mexico and Ecuador was delayed due to a change in route. The delay will put pressure on Countdown's supply of bananas resulting in low stock of New Zealand’s favourite fruit.

"We're currently working on sourcing some additional bananas and apologise to our customers for any inconvenience. While Countdown couldn’t provide a timeframe on when we can expect the yellow fruit to be back in stock,” said a spokesperson for Countdown.

Foodstuffs will also experience lower than normal stock of the fruit because of the delayed shipment. "Banana supplies are short right now due to unforeseen shipping issues, but the good news is we expect supply to be back to normal by the end of the month. We know how much our shoppers love bananas and while we wait for supplies to stabilise, there are some other delicious in-season fruits in store.”

Statistics New Zealand revealed that New Zealander’s spend more on bananas than other fruit, consuming roughly 18kg a year.
