COUNTDOWN BATTLE WITH BASKETS

BAN OF SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BAGS CREATES NEW PROBLEM FOR COUNTDOWN

As more Countdown supermarkets no longer provide single-use plastic bags, stores in Orewa and Silverdale have lost a significant number of plastic baskets as customers forget their reusable bags. Since the change to reusable bag options for purchase at checkouts, supermarkets on the Hibiscus Coast have seen days where very few, or no plastic baskets have been left in the store. Countdown understands the change can be tough as customers have to remember to bring their bags with them each time, however, the number of baskets being taken has been disappointing.

“We encourage customers to bring back any baskets they have so that we have these available for other shoppers. The majority of customers are bringing their own reusable bags and we’d love to thank them for being so supportive of our move to rid New Zealand of millions of plastic bags each year,” said a spokesperson for Countdown.
