Excess of plastic packaging in supermarkets

Most supermarkets have done well to eliminate single-use plastic bags, but consumers look towards delicatessens and bakeries to reduce plastic packaging, as well. Social media has played its part in this movement as pictures of various products having “unnecessary amounts of packaging” gain popularity and support. For example, photos of individually wrapped cucumbers or onions have surfaced, leading customers to think; although plastic bags are gone, there is still much to be done to reduce unnecessary plastic waste.

Supermarkets are under pressure to maintain high standards of clean and fresh food—but adding additional layers of plastic packaging does not seem to be an adequate solution. Although there is a need for some packaging for fresh produce, consumers urge supermarkets to err on the side of caution and look towards sustainable options wherever they can.
