Largely welcomed both by customers and stores, Foodstuffs new recyclable butchery trays will soon be introduced in every New World and PAK’nSAVE supermarket nationwide. The national rollout is now scheduled for early 2016.

First trialled across 19 stores with positive outcomes and feedback, this sustainable packaging solution will help reduce the amount of non-recyclable items thrown away. “By moving to this tray, New World and PAK’nSAVE customers can avoid sending the equivalent of 700 rugby pitches worth of polystyrene trays to landfill each year. The initiative also provides the recycling market with much needed revenue,” said Mike Sammons, Sustainability Manager, Foodstuffs NZ Ltd.

The meat tray is made up of 50 percent recycled material and is accepted by every kerbside recycling scheme throughout the country. It also brings Foodstuffs a bit closer to its target of using just 100 percent recyclable packaging.
