The rebuild of New World Victoria Park has reached a major milestone, with resource consent now approved and construction set to begin.
After more than a year of planning, engineering and design following the June 2025 fire, the approval paved the way to rebuild the supermarket on its existing site, with the new store expected to reopen in December 2027.
Rebuilding Victoria Park represents a significant long-term investment in the local community. New World Victoria Park owner-operator Steve Purton said reaching this point was a milestone he and his team had been looking forward to.
“Getting resource consent and seeing the project move into construction is a really significant moment for us. There’s been a huge amount of work behind the scenes over the past year to get to this point, and we’re incredibly grateful for the support and patience of our customers, neighbours and the wider Victoria Park community," said Purton.
“As a local owner, I’m incredibly proud to be investing in the future of this store and the community we’ve been part of for so long. We know how much Victoria Park means to our customers, and we’re looking forward to bringing the store back and creating a modern supermarket that will serve local families and businesses for decades to come."
He added that Foodstuffs' support and expertise, along with the commitment of the team and the local community, have been incredibly important.
Foodstuffs North Island Head of Property and Development Nick Hanson said the resource consent approval was an important step in bringing the project to life.
“Rebuilding a community supermarket of this scale takes careful planning, and securing resource consent allows us to move confidently into the construction phase," said Hanson.
"We’re working closely with Steve and the project team to deliver a store that meets the needs of the Victoria Park community for many years to come.”
The new retail design by Landini Associates will largely retain the existing footprint, helping streamline construction while delivering:
- A modern supermarket design
- Improved customer flow and accessibility
- More efficient back-of-house operations
- A more sustainable building designed to achieve Green Star accreditation
- A better shopping experience for the growing Victoria Park community
As construction progresses, the project team will continue to keep the Victoria Park community informed through regular updates and opportunities to connect.
Sessions will be held at Grafton Cricket Club and will give local residents, customers and businesses an opportunity to hear the latest updates on the redevelopment and ask questions.

Construction will progress throughout 2026 and 2027, with the new New World Victoria Park expected to reopen in December 2027.
