Million Dollar Investment For PAK’nSAVE Wairau

Foodstuffs North Island and PAK’nSAVE Wairau have invested NZD one million in a comprehensive package of works to help safeguard one of the North Shore’s busiest supermarkets.

For many locals, PAK’nSAVE Wairau is where they go for the weekly shop. The store has played an important role in keeping the community supplied, particularly during severe weather events.

The store was badly damaged during the 2023 Auckland Anniversary Day weather event and was forced to close for eight days.

Since then, the store and Foodstuffs North Island have completed remediation work and worked with consultants to identify improvements to strengthen the site’s resilience, improve safety, and reduce disruption for customers and team members in future events.

Improvements will be implemented over the next four weeks, including the installation of concrete nib walls, flood sensor alarms, a weather station for early warning of changing conditions and removable flood barriers.

As part of the works, the store will also be expanded to introduce Click & Collect for the first time.

A new canopy will be built over dedicated parking spaces so customers can pick up their groceries out of the weather, with an open design to make collections quick and easy. The new service will give local shoppers the option to buy their groceries online and collect them at a time that suits them.

Foodstuffs North Island’s Head of Property, Nick Hanson, said PAK’nSAVE Wairau is critically important for the local community.

“We’ve gathered the latest information from experts and developed practical steps to increase the site’s resilience, improve safety, and minimise future disruption,” he said.

“We can’t control the weather, but we can control how we prepare. The work we’re doing now will help us recover faster from future weather events, while maintaining great customer service levels and improving safety for everyone.”

He added there was strong demand from locals wanting to shop PAK’nSAVE Wairau online, so it was great to be able to bring Click & Collect to the store as part of this investment.

PAK’nSAVE Wairau will remain open while the works are carried out, with any impacts to customers kept to a minimum. Works are expected to be completed by June 2026.
