PAK’nSAVE Clendon’s Shahil Raj has taken out the top spot in South Auckland’s Checkout Operator of the Year.
This signature Foodstuffs North Island competition celebrates checkout operators from across PAK’nSAVE, New World, Four Square, and Gilmours stores. It is in its 77th year and recognises speed, accuracy, and exceptional customer service, with Raj standing out from among 118 talented checkers from across the South Auckland region.
Raj has worked part-time as a checkout supervisor at PAK’nSAVE Clendon since 2020. He began his journey as a checkout operator and progressed to checkout manager, earning a reputation for going above and beyond to provide customers with the best shopping experience. This was his eighth time competing in the competition.
"I’m so happy and excited, I wasn’t expecting to win at all. Achieving this result is amazing, especially alongside my teammates. The support from everyone in the PAK’nSAVE Clendon team is why I love my job so much," he said.
Two other PAK’nSAVE Clendon team members also placed in the top 10, with Denise Ruka in fifth place and Nuzhat Ali in seventh place.
Later this year, 10 regional winners, including Raj, will be mystery shopped by an independent customer service expert who will assess them for customer engagement, checkout efficiency and their all-around customer service.
“Shahil is incredibly charismatic; he lights up the room. He’s energetic, driven, and knows what he wants," said Owner Operator of PAK’nSAVE Clendon, Jack Beaton.
"This win is incredibly special; it’s been a big journey for us as a team, and to come away with three people in the top 10, plus over 30 team members supporting, was amazing. I’m super proud."
The overall Checkout Operator of the Year will be announced at the Foodstuffs North Island Excellence Awards in June 2026.
