New World baker Delmari Janse Van Rensburg has won the LA Judge Award, one of the Australasian baking industry’s top honours.
The 22-year-old was the only New Zealander competing against five of Australia’s best young bakers in a gruelling three-day competition that tested every aspect of their trade, from technical baking skills and production efficiency to theory and creativity.
“It was intense. We were up at 6.30am and studying until midnight. Each day was full-on – we were tested on time management, our work methods, even how we handled unfamiliar equipment. But I loved every moment of it,” she said.
Among the creations she presented were a light rye sourdough, intricately shaped plaits, and artistically scored cobs, including a symbolic yin and yang design. Judges noted her exceptional time management and confident presentation as standouts.
“I was not expecting it so it’s a pretty surreal feeling.”
Originally from South Africa, Delmari Janse Van Rensburg moved to New Zealand in 2016 and started at New World Rolleston as a part-time deli assistant while still at Lincoln High School. She later began an apprenticeship in baking that soon turned into a passion.
“Once I saw what I could create with my hands, I fell in love with baking.”
Now a qualified baker, she thrives in her bakery team's creative and collaborative environment. Her win comes after she was named 2024 Young Bread Baker of the Year in New Zealand, a title that secured her nomination for the LA Judge Award.
Delmari Janse Van Rensburg credited her success to the support of her bakery manager Janine Bell, store owner Glen Steele, and many others who have provided hands-on training and mentorship, particularly in the last six months leading up to the competition, including Bakels NZ, Breadcraft, Champion Flour Mills, and Quality Bakers Auckland.
Celebrating with friends and family in Brisbane, she looked ahead to the next stage in her journey and has planned to use her research grant from last year’s win to study brand management in the UK and gain experience in the Netherlands' bakery sector.
“I never imagined I’d be here. But now, I can’t wait to see where baking takes me next.”
Since 1967, the LA Judge Award has promoted excellence and celebrated the skills of young bakers aged under 25. Each year, young apprentice bakers from across Australia and New Zealand participate in a challenging but friendly competition to test their skills in all aspects of baking, including technical and presentation skills.
