A recent consumer survey by Duncan NZ Venison has found that an increasing number of New Zealanders are asking supermarkets to make venison more available, as they look for alternatives to traditional red meats.

Despite 90 percent of Kiwis enjoying venison, only 30 percent eat it once per week, and the main reason cited for not eating it more regularly was availability.

Having exported premium venison overseas for much of its 27-year history, family-owned company Duncan Venison feels that the NZ market is finally ripe. Duncan launched its consumer-facing brand in July 2016, and its meats are now available online as well as through foodservice distributor Carve Meat Co.

According to director Vinnie Duncan, the company follows a farm-to-fork approach, using sustainably raised, free-range deer.
