With demand for food support remaining high, food banks and City Missions are bracing for another busy winter.

New World’s Family2Family appeal has returned for 2026 to help meet that need, rallying communities to help stock local food banks ahead of the colder months.

Now in its seventh year, Family2Family is built on the simple principle of locals helping locals. Every New World store partners with a nearby food charity or City Mission, so what’s donated in your town stays in your town.

This year, New World will contribute NZD 250,000 to City Missions and local food charity partners across New Zealand, providing an immediate boost amid ongoing pressure on services.

From Monday, the 13th of April to Sunday, the 10th of May, customers can get involved by:

  • Filling a bag with food bank-friendly items and dropping it at their local New World, or
  • Buying a pre-filled NZD 20 Family2Family bag in-store or online at New World.

Alongside pantry staples like rice, pasta, canned goods, cereal and toiletries, locals are encouraged to add a small treat if they can, biscuits or chocolate, because a little treat can make a big difference.

For New World, the appeal is about stepping up when it counts.

“Family2Family is a practical way for our customers to support families who are doing it tough," said Giselle Bleakley.

"It’s everyday essentials and good, solid food going straight to local people who need it, especially as we head into the colder months.”

Stores will highlight the most helpful products, and a full list is available on the New World website.
