TEEN GAVE FIRST AID IN SUPERMARKET DURING QUAKE

When the walls started shaking and part of the store's roof collapsed, yesterday afternoon, 17-year-old hospitality student Jacob Savage was able to perform first aid on a woman in her 60s who suffered a heart attack at Countdown Eastgate, in Christchurch. The young man, who knew what to do because he had done a first aid certificate, put her in the recovery position and waited for the ambulance to arrive.
The 5.7 quake hit Christchurch around 1pm on Sunday, only eight days out from the fifth anniversary of the 2011 quake, awakening traumatic memories. Luckily only minor injuries were reported this time, even though the greatest concentration of earthquakes is expected this week. The National Crisis Management Centre asked the population to assess their home or workplace for damage.
