WELCOME BAY WANTS A SUPERMARKET

Within the next three years, Welcome Bay may finally have its long-awaited supermarket. The council is currently negotiating with New Zealand's major chains, Foodstuffs or Progressive, although details have not been disclosed. The store is likely to create new job opportunities in the area, which currently relies on home-based businesses and schools.

Both supermarket chains have confirmed their interest, yet the market would be big enough for only one store. A decision should be made early next year following public consultation.
