New World has already given away more than two million reusable shopping bags to help customers prepare for no single-use plastic bags at the checkout on Dec 31, 2018 – and as part of Plastic Free July now they’re rewarding customers for changing the habit of a lifetime.

“From Monday 9 July, New World customers who bring reusable bags to pack their groceries at the checkout, will be in to win thousands of awesome environmentally friendly prizes, including a Mitsubishi Plug-In hybrid car, Reid Urban e-bikes, tree saplings, Keep Cups and stainless steel straws, LilyBee wraps and reusable S’Well drink bottles.  We’ll be helping them change in even more positive ways,” said Dom Quin, new GM Marketing and Customer Experience, Foodstuffs NZ.

Helping people change their behaviour when it comes to single-use plastics like grocery bags, is just one of the ways New World supermarkets, and sister stores PAK'nSAVE and Four Square can make a significant impact on the environment.  Recent bans on microbeads, plastic cotton buds and a commitment to exit plastic straws and ensure packaging is reusable, recyclable and compostable will contribute to change as well.

“On top of this, our 100% New Zealand owned brands are halfway through the rollout of 50 Electric Vehicle charging stations around the country – perfect for our Bring Bags hybrid car prize.  We’ve just opened a charging station at PAK'nSAVE Queenstown, and the next has just gone live in Levin.  Once the rollout is complete (Dec 2018), we’ll have more fast-charging stations than in the whole of Australia, at our stores alone,” says Quin.

However, helping customers transition away from single-use plastic bags is the main priority for the Foodstuffs* team.

“It probably comes as no surprise that there are still quite a few customers who love the convenience of a plastic bag and struggle with how they will pack their groceries, line their rubbish bins and pick up after their dogs in the park.  But, change is coming and we’re here to do everything we can to help New Zealanders adjust,” says Quin, “including getting in behind which is a fantastic resource for people looking for advice.  They are delighted to support Bring Bags (to be in to) Win Prizes.”
