Fonterra has developed new Anchor Protein+ flavoured milk, using an innovative formula that is high in protein with no added sugar.

The new formula packs 20g of protein in a 375ml bottle and is the third in a string of beverages with a focus on sugar launched by Fonterra Brands New Zealand over the last few months.

Fonterra general manager RTD beverages, Darren Moffat said the formula for Anchor Protein+ flavoured milk is the first of its kind in New Zealand’s dairy flavoured milk market.

“Our technologists were given the challenge of developing a market leading product that’s high protein, has no added sugar, and that also tastes delicious. After two years of work, they landed on a winning formula for the new Anchor Protein+ flavoured milks,” said Moffat.

The beverage responds to increasing consumer demand for high protein, better-for-you snack food.

“People are seeking out nutritious on-the-go foods and beverages, with research showing 80% of snacking is planned. There’s also a growing awareness of the importance of protein – making snacking options with good levels of protein highly desirable.”

The flavoured milk is the latest in a range of high protein products first introduced by Anchor last year.

“Since hitting shelves last August, our Anchor Protein+ range of milk, yoghurt and powders have been incredibly popular. For example, we’ve seen an 88% growth in sales since launching our Anchor protein+ yoghurt."

Fonterra Head of Nutrition Mindy Wigzell said the Anchor Protein+ range provides convenient ways for New Zealanders to ensure they’re consuming enough protein throughout the day.

“Our bodies need adequate protein every day and getting more than just the minimum requirement is beneficial for optimal health. Research also shows there are benefits to spreading protein intake throughout the day, including helping our bodies use protein more efficiently,” said Wigzell.

Moffat believes that as well as having high protein levels and no added sugar, the Anchor Protein+ milk range uses fresh milk, natural flavours and natural sweeteners.

“Dairy milk is already highly nutritious but we’re always looking for ways to improve our beverages and meet consumer demand for healthy and convenient options."

The introduction of Anchor Protein+ flavoured milk follows the recent release of new Primo and Mammoth flavoured milks, which both have 40 per cent less added sugar. All three beverages are produced at the new Apollo plant in Whakatu, Hawke’s Bay.
