Puhoi Valley came away from the 2016 New Zealand Champions of Cheese Awards with top prizes for both the feta and washed rind cheeses. The two prizes were the centrepiece of a night where Puhoi Valley was successful across the board, ending the night with five gold medals, five silver and five bronze across their entire cheese range.
It was another impressive outing by the 34-year-old cheese company, led by Head Cheese Maker Franck Beaurain.
“We are very proud of our achievements in washed rind and feta this year,” said Beaurain, noting that washed rind is increasing in popularity in New Zealand due to its strong earthy aroma and lingering flavour.
Born in Normandy, France, Beaurain has over 30 years of cheese making experience and is particularly proud of his top-prize winning cheeses.
“We think that it is best in class and we are pleased that the judges agree.”
