RECYCLABLE BOTTLES

Following the initiatives in Fiji, Coca-Cola Asia is joining the trend of switching all the new Sprite bottles from green to clear to increase its recyclability.

Sprite was launched in the ASEAN region in 1968 and has remained in its green-coloured bottles. Coca-Cola is changing the bottle from green to clear to keep in line with its objectives of increasing PET plastic use.

"A PET bottle has a significantly lower carbon footprint than the equivalent amount of aluminium and glass, which gets reduced even further when recycled content is included," said Coca-Cola.

Green Sprite bottles contain titanium dioxide, which can contaminate the recycling process. Therefore, converting to transparent bottles increases the value of the plastic in the market and its ability to remain in a circular economy.

The switch will begin in the Philippines and will expand to other markets in Southeast Asia through 2020.
