The Future is Golden for Turmeric

This year’s pandemic has seen consumers become increasingly concerned about their health and wellbeing, seeking better-for-you diets and nutrition. According to Whole Foods Market’s top 10 food trend predictions for 2021, the lines are blurring between the supplement and grocery aisles, a trend that only looks to accelerate into the new year.

“Suppliers are incorporating functional ingredients to foster a calm headspace and support the immune system,” said the Whole Foods report.

Turmeric also looks to feature in more baby food products.

“Thanks to some inspired culinary innovation, parents have never had a wider or richer range of ingredients to choose from. We’re talking portable, on-the-go squeeze pouches full of rhubarb, rosemary, purple carrots and omega-3-rich flaxseeds. Little eaters, big flavours..”

In 2016, turmeric became a rising star in the functional food searches on Google, leading to a 21 percent increase of new product launches featuring turmeric that same year. It was the most searched ‘food with a function’ on Google and the ingredient had 3.9 million searches on Youtube, with consumers trying to educate themselves on the benefits of incorporating it into their diets.

Turmeric was also named by Mintel as a superfood to watch in 2016.

“As the popularity of turmeric in food and drink products will increase consumer exposure to the spice, this could encourage consumers to seek out turmeric supplements as well,” said Jane Barnett, Insights Manager ANZ at Mintel.

This has definitely been the case in NZ, with several supplement brands highlighting turmeric as a key ingredient on pack.

Fast forward four years and turmeric is still one of the top ingredients sought after by health-conscious consumers with its potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to boost their health. It has developed into much more than a powdered spice, with it being incorporated into functional foods, beverages, supplements and cosmetics.

Social media has also helped the ingredient stay at the top of the grocery list, highlighting trendy and attractive foods, beverages and cosmetics that exude wellness and better-for-you.

“We saw customers become really interested in turmeric and products with turmeric flavouring about a year ago,” said a Countdown spokesperson.

“Since then we’ve seen them continue to be a popular pick with Kiwis as more and more product innovation happens. There is not clear favourite turmeric product, but it’s certainly a popular choice by itself for cooking, along with turmeric latte mixes and turmeric flavoured snacks.”

Now is the perfect time to incorporate this functional, aromatic flavour that is a must-have and key ingredients for 2021 products.

Below are some key products featuring turmeric that are a must-have on shelf.
