For many New Zealand consumers, the arrival of Australian mangoes signals the beginning of summer.
With their vibrant colour, sweet aroma and juicy flesh, they have become a seasonal favourite, and in recent years, New Zealand has grown to become the largest export market for Australian mangoes.
Australia produces approximately 70,000 tonnes of mangoes each year, with the vast majority grown across the tropical regions of the Northern Territory and Queensland.
Across all regions, growers carefully manage orchards to deliver premium-quality fruit throughout the season.
Although harvesting typically begins in September in the Northern Territory, Australian mangoes are generally available in New Zealand from around October each year, aligning with the start of the Queensland harvest and building through spring and summer.
Consumers can enjoy a diverse range of varieties, including:
- Kensington Pride: Australia’s original mango, celebrated for its rich tropical flavour and distinctive aroma.
- R2E2: a large, round fruit with striking colour, firm flesh and sweet, fresh flavour.
- Calypso®: known for its sweet and juice flavour, low-fibre flesh and strong shelf appeal.
- Honey Gold: recognised for its vibrant golden skin and sweet, rich flavour.
- Keitt: a late-season variety with a mild, sweet flavour and firm flesh.
