Award-Winning Bravo Apples Return For Winter

AUSTRALIA | One of Australia’s most celebrated and awarded apple varieties, Bravo apples have officially returned to supermarket shelves for winter.

Backed by scientific research, premium slow-to-brown Bravo apples have increasingly found a place in consumers’ fruit bowls and lunch boxes as the variety has established itself as a sought-after winter snack.

Grown around Australia, Bravo apples have been revered for their distinctive burgundy blush, exceptional sweetness, crisp texture and ability to remain white long after being cut.

Fresh fruit supplier and Bravo apple marketer WA Farm Direct managing director Jenny Mercer said the Bravo apples have become a great lunch box addition or anytime snack.

“Thanks to the high concentration of natural antioxidants in Bravo apples, the white flesh stays bright, clean, and appetising for hours after being sliced,” she said.

“They’re also perfect for grazing serving suggestions, such as charcuterie boards where their dark burgundy skin complements meats and cheeses, and they look freshly cut even after sitting for a while. Their natural sweetness makes them a clean, desk-friendly, playground-friendly snack that is a great alternative to processed snacks.”

Additionally, industry- and government-funded scientific research has shown that premium Bravo apples were among the highest-flavonoid-rich apples grown in Australia. At the same time, chlorogenic acid, which plays a key role in regulating how the body metabolises sugar and fat, was found in both the burgundy skin and flesh.

Ongoing clinical research led by Dr Ruey Leng Loo at the Australian National Phenome Centre (ANPC) at Murdoch University in Perth has also been conducting human medical trials to assess the benefits of eating two Bravo apples a day.

Developed by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development in Western Australia, Bravo is a natural cross between Cripps Red and Royal Gala, grown by around 85 growers across Australia and distributed nationally.

Bravo apples are available at leading East Coast supermarkets and independent retail outlets until December. Volumes of premium-grade fruit have increased about ten percent from last season.
