Tesco and Lidl’s legal battle over logos will trial at High Court next year. The Lidl logo is a yellow circle with the brand name inside a blue square. Tesco’s club card logo is also a yellow circle inside a blue square.
Lidl has argued Tesco is trying to ‘ride on its coat-tails’ for the club card. Lidl has said customers associate the blue square and yellow circle to their brand, even without the brand name on it.
Tesco’s counterclaim that the wordless trademark had been registered in bad faith by Lidl, with no intentions of using it, will be accepted in court.
A Tesco spokesperson has said they will continue to defend their claim, while a Lidl spokesperson said they remain confident in the outcome of the 2023 trial.
Tesco has a market share of 27 percent in the UK, compared to Lidl’s seven percent.
